hello

i'm new here, but i'm excited to contribute to this community as soon as i can learn the art of coptic binding.

i've tried many times to learn this off the internet and from books, but it just doesn't make sense to me, because the instructions are shown by illustration; my question is this; does any know of a website, or do you possibly have pictures of coptic binding done step by step by human hands (that sounds funny! : ) and real book covers and sections of paper?

i would really like to master this technique, it's just difficult to learn off of illustrated photos.

granted this website http://www.doe.state.in.us/olr/grantprojects/books/Coptic%20Book.htm is SO helpful; it's the EXACT technique i've wanted to master, but when it came to the black and white pictures, it becomes difficult for me to follow; i think it goes in hand with a learning disability; i'm a visual learner, but i require color to understand things...if that makes sense. gah! i must sound funny :)

thank you for any kind of contribution/answer to my question! i'm very excited to have found this community! i look forward to everyones posts! everyone seems so talented! :)

Borax for carpet shampooer

I've been using Borax as a general laundry and household cleaner for a while now, I've even used it for spot treatment for the carpet and getting rid of fleas in the carpet (works GREAT too for fleas and doen't hurt the fur babies)

I can't really find a concentration for the carpet shampooer or even if I SHOULD attempt to use it in the carpet shampooer. I have a Bissel upright single unit shampooer. I usually just use hot water and a bit of white distilled vinegar but doesn't REALLY clean well. So I was thinking of using Borax, but don't want to ruin the carpet shampooer. Too expensive to replace. :-)

Any suggestions?

Window Screen

Summer has seemingly arrived in Seattle and I'm having a dilemma with one of my windows.  There is one window in my home that opens out instead of sliding up and down (so imagine a window that opens like a door would open).  The window is about five feet tall.  This past fall we got a kitten who is very interested in jumping off of high places and going outside.  We don't really want her to jump out that window, but we also don't want to keep the window closed because it's the only window on that side of the house and creates a cross-breeze.

Does anyone know how to put a screen into that kind of window?  It would need to be removable, because you have to reach outside in order to open and close the window.  Normally on this kind of window I've seen window cranks, but this one doesn't have one.

Help me choose a plant to grow!

I want some small plants for decoration and growing. I'm terrible with plants though!

Things to consider:

- Plant must be small enough to bring inside and keep up high and away from my cat
- I live in an apartment
- I live near DC (if that tells you the climate)
- I have a balcony that gets partial direct sunlight in the early morning (faces northeast). I am on the top floor so there is no balcony for "shelter" above me. The balcony is recessed but still open enough for rain and sun.

Really I'm looking for something hearty enough to survive the heat outside in the summer, but be okay indoors with no sunlight. I have nowhere to put the plants in sunlight inside the apartment.

I currently have a snake plant, which has done very very well for two years. I had an aloe plant, but I killed it once I put it outside. Same goes for my china doll plant! Seems they do okay inside, but once they are outside, they die. Maybe too much sun? Not enough or too much water?

I am doomed for a life of fake plants? (which I do have too...haha!)

If this isn't allowed, feel free to delete!

I want:

The name of the sites to "report" users on here.

Someone is being completely unresponsive and owes me things I paid for a month ago, so I think it's now legit to post under those sites?

I haven't been on here in a little while.. but I had a question.

Some women at my work claim if you put a bar of ivory soap at the end on your bed (under the bottom sheet) it helps the circulation in your legs. Has anyone else herd this? Does it work? One of the women I work with said she does it and it helps her.

Print Size For Making Shirts

I need to design a T-Shirt, and it's going to be entered into a contest. I'm going to make my design in Photoshop. I'm just wondering how large I should make my image so it will translate to a HQ image when printed onto a shirt.

Thanks!

Exploding Pyrex?

Tonight was apparently not the night for me to make baba ghanouj; after finding I was missing half the ingredients and opting to kinda wing it, I pulled my Pryex 9x9 pan out of the oven after the eggplant was finally done roasting, and boom! Well, not really boom. Last time I made this stuff, the eggplant exploded. This time, the Pyrex broke. It broke somewhere between the point I took it off the oven rack and the point I put it on the stove burner; it fortunately did not actually explode, but rather two and a half sides and a bit of the bottom broke off, not all in one piece, with a fair bit of glass shards in the (thankfully silicon) potholder and at least some amount in the eggplant runoff juices (and somehow, it managed to all break in my hand, above the floor and not the stove, yet it all made it onto the stove in one eggplant-filled mass). Needless to say, I found something to do with some lentils instead.

It looks like this isn't an unusual issue, which kinda startles me; I've been using Pyrex for years, and my father was a scientific glassblower that wrote books on making glasswork used For Science, and with his (non-corporate) endorsement we used the stuff in the parents' house too. As this time I actually poked holes in the eggplant so it wouldn't explode (ha ha) I'm suspecting that this was an issue of the increased eggplant juices getting hot enough (but not covering enough of the pan bottom) that when I picked it up and moved it and the juices went to the other side, it was a fast enough temperature change that the pan just gave up on life. Anyone else have some better information than the link (which is largely "hey, my pyrex exploded toooo! I had my dinner in it!"), or suggestions of other bakeware that might have less of an issue with this? Should Pyrex only be getting used if stuff isn't really getting shuffled around?
